MEIS - FERRARA

THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ITALIAN HEBRAISM AND THE SHOAH

The National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah intends to illustrate the originality of the Italian Jewish history in the larger context of the European and Mediterranean environment; at the same time, it will promote cultural initiatives that are able to underline the vast patrimony of ideas, artefacts, and experiences produced in Italy by the Jews over more than two millennia. To achieve these goals, there will be a section with temporary shows, plus a variety of collateral institutions, such as a library, a research centre, a children’s wing, seminars and courses, periodic lectures and presentations of new books.

MEIS – Foundation National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah – Via Piangipane 81 – Ferrara
An exhibition at the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah (MEIS) to tell a century of the daily life of Italian Jews through history, art, traditions, memories
An exhibition which, in seven sections, offers a detailed overview of the twentieth century.
A project that illustrates the complex path of first acquiring citizenship, then losing and finally reacquiring rights, by a minority that has recognized and integrated itself into Italian society.
It begins at the end of the nineteenth century after the dismantling of the ghettos and ends at the dawn of the new millennium, collecting the questions of contemporary Judaism. There is also a reflection on the Shoah: the dramatic overturning of the Racial Laws of 1938, the persecution and deportation.

The exhibition is enriched by contemporary works of art; photographs from public and private archives; historical documents and family objects. There are many stories collected that will make you discover and rediscover figures from Jewish Italy: from the art of Olga and Corinna Modigliani; to the paintings of Corrado Cagli up to Antonietta Raphaël Mafai, Rudolf Levy and Emanuele Luzzati. The public will also be able to immerse themselves in the contents collected in the multimedia table which has been entrusted with the task of making insights, original materials and first editions accessible, which contribute to completing the mosaic of the cultural history of the 20th century.
